Kronborg and Frederiksborg in One Day: the Tour or the Train?

Kronborg and Frederiksborg from Copenhagen by train in one day: S-train to Hillerød, the local line to Helsingør, entry costs in DKK, and when the tour is worth it (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

You can see Kronborg and Frederiksborg in one day by train: S-train line A from Copenhagen Central to Hillerød takes about 40 minutes, a local train runs on from Hillerød to Helsingør in about 30, and the Coastal Line brings you back to Copenhagen in under an hour. For two castles the train is cheaper and gives you as long as you like at each. The tour earns its price when you want Roskilde Cathedral as well, a guide at Kronborg, or a winter day with no timetables to juggle: the castles day is from US$208 a person on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026), entrance fees included, and its calendar is below.

By rail from Copenhagen Central: Roskilde 22 to 25 minutes, Hillerød about 40, Helsingør under an hour, and Hillerød to Helsingør about 30 (DSB, Lokaltog and the castles, October 2026).

The two-castle loop by train

The loop works in either direction. In winter, start with Kronborg, because it closes first:

  1. Copenhagen Central to Helsingør on the Coastal Line (Kystbanen). Kronborg gives the journey as around 46 minutes with trains about every 20 minutes; DSB’s 2026 timetable shows some trips at 55. From Helsingør station Kronborg is about a 10-minute walk along the harbour.
  2. Helsingør to Hillerød on Lokaltog’s local line, about 30 minutes, every half hour on weekdays and through the middle of the day at weekends. It stops at Fredensborg on the way. Press the STOP button on the platform or in the train to have it stop.
  3. Hillerød station to Frederiksborg, about 15 minutes on foot, or bus 301 or 302.
  4. Hillerød back to Copenhagen on S-train line A, the end of the line, about 40 minutes, with trains every 10 minutes in the daytime.

In winter that order matters. Kronborg opens 10:00 to 16:00 from Tuesday to Sunday in November 2026; in December it opens 10:00 to 16:00 from Tuesday to Friday and 10:00 to 17:00 at weekends. It is closed on Mondays in both months, apart from 28 December, while Frederiksborg is open every day of the year until 17:00. On 21 December 2026 the sun rises in Copenhagen at 08:37 and sets at 15:38.

Entry prices are the castles’, the cathedral’s and the museum’s own, October 2026. Single tickets on Zealand’s trains are priced by the number of zones you cross, so check the fare for your journey in DSB’s or Rejseplanen’s journey planner. The Copenhagen Card Discover covers the trains to Roskilde, Hillerød and Helsingør and entry to all four sites, which can tip the sums if you are using it for the city as well.

When the train wins

  • For Kronborg and Frederiksborg only. The loop is simple, the trains are frequent, and the two entries come to DKK 260 for an adult.
  • For families. Children go into all four sites free, so on the train their day costs only the fare.
  • When you want time. The Hamlet Tours day gives Frederiksborg two hours and a quarter, lunch included; on your own you can stay until it closes and walk the Baroque Garden.

Frederiksborg sells its entry ticket online, from US$19 an adult (checked October 2026), with the Baroque Garden and a free audio guide app included.

When the tour wins

  • When Roskilde is on the list too. Roskilde is on a different line, west of Copenhagen, 22 to 25 minutes by train. All three towns and the Viking Ship Museum in one day by rail means four trains, a bus or a long walk in Roskilde, and little time anywhere.
  • For a guide. The castles day includes a guided visit inside Kronborg and the cathedral; by train you have the audio guide app at Frederiksborg and Kronborg’s own 45-minute English tour, In Hamlet’s Footsteps. It runs until 30 December 2026, at 12:30 in November and December, and you collect the ticket at Kronborg’s shop.
  • In winter. The tour runs to its own clock from 08:30, and you never wait on a cold platform for a connection.
