What the day covers
The itinerary of the Hamlet Tours day runs Roskilde first and Kronborg last:
- Roskilde Cathedral, about 50 minutes. The brick cathedral where the Danish kings and queens are buried, with the guide.
- The Viking Ship Museum, about 55 minutes. The five ships raised from Roskilde Fjord, entry included.
- Frederiksborg, about 2 hours 15 minutes. On your own in the castle and the Museum of National History, with time for lunch in Hillerød.
- Kronborg, about 75 minutes. A guided visit inside the castle Shakespeare called Elsinore, at the narrowest point of the Øresund.
Pickup and drop-off are at 78 hotels in central Copenhagen. Water and wifi are on board; luggage and large bags cannot travel on the bus, and the day is not suitable for wheelchair users, because the castles have steep stairs and Kronborg has no lift. The three stops has what you see at each one.
Two operators run the castles day
Hamlet Tours runs the day all year and has by far the longer review record: 2,269 reviews on GetYourGuide. Ophelia Tours, a smaller Copenhagen company, runs a similar day in seasonal versions; its full day on GetYourGuide has 52 reviews. The castles and the cathedral are the same on both. What differs is the days of the week, the price, Ophelia Tours’ warning that departures with fewer than six bookings are likely to be cancelled, and in winter the Viking Ship Museum, which Ophelia Tours leaves out from October to March. The order usually differs too: Ophelia Tours’ GetYourGuide and Viator listings start at Kronborg, but its own winter page starts in Roskilde and says the order can change. Hamlet Tours vs Ophelia Tours sets them side by side, and Ophelia Tours covers that company’s castle days one by one.
Viator sells the Hamlet Tours day under the operator’s own title, the Grand Day Trip around Copenhagen, from US$199 in our October 2026 check. It is the same day: same stops, same 16-person cap.
In winter
From November to February the Hamlet Tours day runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, plus a few more days around Christmas, from 08:30 to 17:00. Two things change:
- Roskilde Cathedral becomes a photo stop outside from November to March, by the tour’s itinerary. The cathedral generally closes at 16:00 from October to April, and its day-by-day calendar on roskildedomkirke.dk shows the days it closes early for church services.
- Kronborg closes earlier and on Mondays. By kronborg.dk, in November 2026 it opens 10:00 to 16:00 from Tuesday to Sunday. In December it opens 10:00 to 16:00 from Tuesday to Friday and 10:00 to 17:00 at weekends. It is closed on Mondays in both months, except Monday 28 December (10:00 to 16:00), and on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. Its hours for January to March 2027 are not yet posted; in 2026 it was closed on Mondays from 2 January to 28 March. A Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday tour never meets the Monday closure.
Frederiksborg is open every day of the year from 10:00 to 17:00, Mondays included, and the Viking Ship Museum every day from 10:00 to 16:00 between 19 October and 30 April.
What the entry tickets would cost you
The tour price includes four tickets. Bought at the door, for one adult, they come to:
| Site | Adult entry | Under 18 |
|---|---|---|
| Kronborg | DKK 150, or 135 online | Free |
| Frederiksborg | DKK 125 | Free |
| Roskilde Cathedral | DKK 80 | Free |
| Viking Ship Museum | DKK 130 from 19 October to 30 April, 165 in summer | Free |
That is DKK 485 in winter and DKK 520 in summer, before any trains. Hamlet Tours’ own site lists the day at DKK 1,300 for an adult and DKK 900 for under-18s (October 2026). Children enter all four sites free, so for a family the gap between the tour and the train is widest: the child price buys the transport and the guide. Tour or train works through that choice.
Going on your own
All three towns are on the train from Copenhagen Central Station: Roskilde in 22 to 25 minutes, Hillerød in about 40 on S-train line A, and Helsingør in under an hour on the Coastal Line. A local train links Hillerød and Helsingør directly in about 30 minutes, so Frederiksborg and Kronborg fit in one day by rail; all three in one day by rail is a long one. Frederiksborg sells its entry ticket ahead online, from US$19 an adult (checked October 2026), with an audio guide app and the Baroque Garden.
The castles in the city
Copenhagen has its own royal palaces, a walk apart: Rosenborg with the crown jewels, Amalienborg with the changing of the guard, and Christiansborg with the Royal Reception Rooms. They need no day trip at all. Castles and palaces in Copenhagen covers the three and how they fit around the day out.

Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Roskilde Tour FAQ
The questions people ask before the castles day from Copenhagen, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
Hotel pickup and drop-off in central Copenhagen, the driver-guide, and entry to Roskilde Cathedral, the Viking Ship Museum, Frederiksborg and Kronborg. Water and wifi are on board. Lunch is not included: the stop at Frederiksborg in Hillerød leaves time to buy it. The group is at most 16 people.
About eight and a half hours on GetYourGuide's listing; Hamlet Tours runs it 09:15 to 18:00 from May to October and 08:30 to 17:00 from November to April. Ophelia Tours' full day runs 9 to 10.5 hours depending on the season. Hamlet Tours vs Ophelia Tours compares the two.
Yes: from November to February Hamlet Tours runs it on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, plus a few days around Christmas. In those months Roskilde Cathedral is a photo stop outside, and the day starts at 08:30. Kronborg is closed on Mondays in November and December 2026, which those weekdays avoid.
They are different castles: Kronborg is the fortress on the Sound where Hamlet is set, Frederiksborg the palace on a lake with Denmark's Museum of National History inside. The castles day covers both, which is why most people never have to choose. The three stops has what each one is like.
Yes: S-train line A reaches Hillerød in about 40 minutes, and a local train runs from Hillerød to Helsingør in about 30 minutes, every half hour on weekdays. The Coastal Line brings you back from Helsingør to Copenhagen Central in under an hour. Adding Roskilde as well makes a long day. Tour or train sets out the route and the cost.
DKK 125 for an adult and free for anyone under 18; students and over-65s pay DKK 105 (October 2026). The castle is open every day of the year from 10:00 to 17:00. The Frederiksborg Castle entry ticket can be bought ahead online, and the castles tours include it.
Yes: it is Hamlet Tours' own name for the same castles day, which Viator sells under that title. The stops, the 16-person cap and the inclusions are the same; only the price on a given date can differ between the two booking sites.
Frederik II built Kronborg between 1574 and 1585; his son Christian IV, born at Frederiksborg in 1577, built Frederiksborg as it stands between 1600 and 1620. Both kings lie in Roskilde Cathedral, the third stop of the day. The kings behind the castles tells the story.
